John W. Johnson served as interim dean of the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences from 2008 to 2009, providing experienced leadership during a period of transition. A historian and longtime member of the University of Northern Iowa faculty, Johnson joined the university in 1988 as professor and head of the Department of History, a position he held for 14 years before returning to full-time teaching. A respected scholar and author, he published numerous books and articles, including work on student rights that received honorable mention in the Benjamin F. Shambaugh Award competition from the State Historical Society of Iowa. Following his service as interim dean, Johnson returned to the Department of History, where he continued teaching, mentoring students and contributing to the university until his retirement in 2015. Remembered as a dedicated teacher, thoughtful leader and supportive colleague, Johnson's commitment to scholarship and student success left a lasting mark on the college and the university community.
