Donald Whitnah served as acting dean of the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences from 1989 to 1990, bringing decades of leadership and academic experience to the role. A historian, distinguished scholar and longtime member of the University of Northern Iowa faculty, Whitnah joined the university in 1959 and served as head of the Department of History for 19 years before becoming acting dean. Throughout his career, he was known for his thoughtful leadership, dedication to students and commitment to academic excellence. An accomplished author whose scholarship explored topics ranging from U.S. diplomatic history to the American occupation of Austria, Whitnah was recognized as a UNI Distinguished Scholar in 1990. The following year, he received the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Austria in recognition of his contributions to Austrian studies. Remembered by colleagues as a "gentleman and a scholar," Whitnah's leadership, scholarship and decades of service left a lasting impact on the college and the university.
